The Old Gardens Cottage is a unique two-person watchtower in Pendeen, Cornwall, with panoramic views over fields to the sea and Pendeen Lighthouse. Once a granite barn predating the main house, it was transformed by local WW2 radio operator William Waters, who added maritime details—portholes, railings and ship fittings—creating a charming, seafaring feel. Waters collected early radios, including Marconi models; his collection now resides in a Suffolk museum.
Inside, the open-plan living space has a self-catering kitchenette with fridge-freezer, double countertop hob, kettle, combi microwave, conventional oven/grill and toaster. The ground-floor bathroom includes an electric shower, basin, Heated towel rail and WC. A staircase leads to the upper bedroom with a double bed beneath original low beams (mind your head). From here, step through the “hatch” to The Lookout—a wraparound balcony for morning coffee or sunset wine—also reachable via an external spiral stair that returns to the garden. Outside are two lawned areas and seating with wide sea views; the garden is enclosed, but dogs must be supervised.
Walk an easy mile downhill to Pendeen Watch lighthouse; from there it’s about 10 minutes along a track to Beach Cove for swimming. Continue 15 minutes on the coast path to Portheras Cove, voted “Best Secret Beach” by The Times, or take the more rugged track behind the house to reach it in roughly 20 minutes.
In recent years the tower served as the studio of Cornish painter-printmaker Angela Annesley; her artworks are displayed throughout, and guests can purchase pieces at a discount.
Good to know: stairs are open-tread and open at the top floor, so the layout isn’t suitable for reduced mobility. The bedroom has sloped ceilings and reduced head height. One well-behaved dog is welcome. Children are not permitted. A BBQ isn’t provided, though you may bring your own. A second on-site property, Western Watch, can be booked for an additional six guests.
Whether you want a peaceful coastal hideaway or an artistic escape, The Old Gardens Cottage offers a memorable stay with unforgettable views.
